Is the Solar System Flat? A Buyer's Comparison: Components vs. Turnkey PV

First, let's settle the meaning of 'solar system'

When I managed office purchasing, the phrase 'solar system' was new to me. It can mean the planets that orbit the Sun, or it can mean a complete photovoltaic (PV) installation. In this article, the solar system meaning is the second one: modules, inverters, mounting, wiring, monitoring, and optional storage.

My first practical question was 'is the solar system flat?' For astronomy, yes: planetary orbits sit in a relatively flat disc. For a commercial roof, the answer is different. A PV system can be installed on a flat roof, but the solar panels themselves usually should not lie completely flat. That distinction sets up the comparison below.

The two buying routes: components vs. turnkey

I compared two routes for buying a rooftop PV system for a company building.

Option A: Buy the components yourself. Purchase a Jinko 535W bifacial solar panel, Huawei Sun2000 inverters, a Luna2000 battery and the racking, then hire an electrical contractor to install it. You coordinate compatibility, permits, and warranties.

Option B: Buy a turnkey package. Use one EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) company to design, supply, install, and maintain the whole array. You can still name preferred brands in the contract.

Now I will compare those options using total cost of ownership, not just the first line of each quote.

Dimension 1: quote price vs. total cost of ownership

When I first started buying services, I assumed the lowest written quote was automatically the best. Three budget overruns later, I learned to think in TCO. TCO includes the price per watt, delivery, engineering review, project management, lost staff time, installation risk, and the cost of warranty follow-ups.

Option A often appears cheaper if you look only at panel and inverter price. A vendor can list a 'Jinko 535W bifacial solar panel' or a 'Huawei Sun2000 inverter' at a competitive number. But if a missing invoice causes $2,400 in rejected expenses, or an unclear model number delays the shipment, the real cost grows. Option B may show a higher total line item, but that line often includes the coordination work that someone must do. Why does this matter? Because the lowest quote is not necessarily the lowest TCO.

Also ask vendors to substantiate performance claims. The FTC's advertising guidance requires that claims be truthful and backed by evidence, and the FTC Green Guides apply to vague environmental claims. If a seller says the system will 'eliminate your utility bill,' request the simulation behind that number.

Dimension 2: is the solar system 'flat'? The bifacial test

On a low-slope building, the question is not whether the roof is flat, but whether the modules will be mounted flat. A flat-mounted solar panel loses much of the benefit of a bifacial module.

The Jinko 535W bifacial solar panel captures light from both sides. That rear-side gain depends on tilt, mounting height, roof surface albedo, and shading. NREL's research on bifacial PV has shown these factors can make a significant difference to yield. If the module sits close to a dark roof at a 0-degree angle, the back side does very little. A slightly raised racking design at a modest tilt, on a light-colored or ballasted roof, can transform the same module's output.

To me, the surprising conclusion is this: paying more for better racking and a lower tilt can generate better ROI than taking the cheapest 'flat system' quote. If a salesperson tells you the solar system is flat, the correct procurement response is: 'At what tilt angle and mounting height? Show me the energy model.'

I am not a PV engineer, so I cannot run the structural calculation myself. What I can do as a buyer is ask the right questions and compare the outputs side by side.

Dimension 3: accountability and warranty coordination

Option A creates multiple vendor relationships: Jinko for the panel, Huawei for the inverter and battery, plus a racking manufacturer and an installer. If performance falls short, you may need to coordinate three warranty conversations before you find the culprit.

In our 2024 vendor consolidation project, I saw how much internal time disappears when people manage too many suppliers. Option B keeps you to one EPC contract. When I sign a turnkey contract, the EPC is the one responsible for making the design work. That does not make Option B automatically better; it means the EPC's project management fee is part of the value you are buying.

If you go with Option B, the contract should list exact equipment and models: a Huawei Sun2000 series inverter, Luna2000 battery, and Jinko 535W bifacial panel. Avoid vague product categories.

Dimension 4: watch out for model number traps

This is where I almost made a costly error. Searching for 'Huawei Y6 battery price' returns a phone battery, not a solar storage battery. Huawei makes consumer electronics and digital energy products. Solar storage from Huawei is the Luna2000 series, and the inverter is a Sun2000 model. If a supplier lists only 'Huawei battery,' ask for the exact product code.

The same logic applies to modules. A quote that says 'Jinko 535W bifacial solar panel' is not enough; the full module model number and datasheet should be attached. In procurement, a short model number can hide different product specifications and a different warranty.

Final decision: what I would do

If your company has an internal solar or electrical engineering team and expects multiple projects, Option A can be worthwhile. The savings from buying components separately pay for the coordination time.

If you are managing one rooftop installation at an office or warehouse, choose Option B, but specify the components you want. A turnkey package built around a Jinko 535W bifacial panel and a Huawei Sun2000 inverter with Luna2000 storage gives you a single contract plus high-performance hardware. That is how TCO thinking works: you are buying a result, not only hardware.

And when someone asks 'is the solar system flat?,' you can answer with two words: 'not if you want good bifacial yield.' Then show them the energy model and the total cost of ownership.
